I (28F) am originally from Canada, and on WHV in New Zealand. Being in the southern hemisphere has been really great, but also really challenging because I’m so far from my family and friends. I have decided that I won’t stay beyond my visa, which makes me wonder…what’s next?
I have contemplated doing another working holiday somewhere (and have dreamed about living in the UK)—but I am a little worried that I’ll face the same core issues of feeling unsettled and temporary in a place.
I get the feeling that this is a common problem people at my age encounter, so my question is: how have those of you who have experimented with living in new places managed to “figure it out”?
It helps to shortlist it with a list of places you can actually go.
Good weather, beautiful architecture, relatively cheap cost of living.
Find anywhere with these requirements?
Is living close to your friends/family more important then benefits you gain from living in a country X?
I’d always just meet women online and just go from there, wherever that would be
When you find out, let me know. Sincerely, someone with way too many options.
Money/quality of life ratio
Know what your priorities and non-negotiables are for your lifestyle. And, consider the future i.e. being away from family, ageing parents etc. because it will catch up to you, eventually.
I visited different places until I found one that suited my personality and values. It pretty quickly felt like home upon moving and getting settled.
But I don’t have strong ties to the place that I came from. If the main reason you don’t want to stay in NZ is that you miss your friends and family, that is going to follow you if you go anywhere except back home.
If it is more that you miss having social ties, and you didn’t find them in NZ, that’s something that could be overcome in a new place.
Noticed that my career in Japan hit a glass ceiling (in tech) and the country was going downhill anyway; so decided to move back. Was also tired of taxes getting higher but getting nothing in return but QoL getting worse
Find out what you hate first and decide according to that.
Hey I feel the exact same way, from the US living in NL. It’s a struggle.
