I just read a long thread about all of the things US expats miss about life in the US. I thought it would be interesting to ask about the opposite: What do you NOT miss about life in the US?

    One I haven’t seen mentioned yet…

The military advertising and showing off circle jerk everywhere. Recently streamed a NFL game and I forgot how much it’s everywhere and in your face. Not just commercials for the navy or marines, but the integration of the military in to all parts of life.

There’s such a long list but the health care system and pervasive political partisanship are the top two for me. I expect those will come up often in this thread.

    Things I don’t miss:

    -Rampant homelessness

-Dangerous or sketchy people out in the street (in LA it’s all the time, I hate feeling scared or worried about these random weirdos)

-How EVERYTHING is expensive. No matter what it is, it’s gonna be a hit to the pocket book.

-Going anywhere is an exhausting adventure

    -Mass shootings and gang members

-in the US, the only things to do relate to giving money to a business.

-Everything is built around a car, there’s not many places to where it’s normal to walk around just for fun. In LA, pedestrian places like Hollywood Blvd or Venice Beach have become real sketchy.

-Tipping has outrageous and makes already expensive food even more expensive.

-How tax is not included in the price

-Because rent is so expensive most friends/ family live in small apts or with their parents. It makes simply hanging out more complicated

-Fighting in clubs or in general. I’ve lived out of the US for 4 years and I’ve never seen a single fight. Came back to LA, went to a bar and saw 5 fights in one night.

-Americans are so miserable, obsessed with work, don’t know how to have fun and many people so sensitive or brainwashed

Price of living, horrible public transportation and driving everywhere, and how loud and opinionated people are.

Everything, from the news, to the plot lines in children’s television, is HIGH STAKES.

Things are still important where I’m living now, but when everything is important, nothing is important.

Cost of living and the healthcare system (needing a referral for everything, and the extreme greed of it all).

DON’T miss all the gangs, the violence, the drug addicts, the homeless, the ridiculous price of seeing a doctor, having to drive to every single place, the lack of good public transportation, and did I mention, NOT having to LIVE in Fear Just walking Around at Night, anywhere…
And the Political Divide, the Grifters, the Shills, the liars, and the Ruling Class…
Murica has some great stuff about it, but it also sucks b*lls.

I definitely do not miss the guns! Gun culture in general, plus reading about yet another mass shooting in the news, worrying about “regular” gun violence (ie handguns on the street vs someone shooting up a public place with an assault rifle) in my city, etc. Glad to be living somewhere where I never have to wonder if some stranger will have a concealed weapon on them, or if I got lost and made a U-turn using someone’s driveway whether someone would come out shooting at me.

I don’t miss the horrid media coverage and spin. Its designed to divide people. Everyone is shouting or angry about something and very few are actually listening. Angry grandpa or Karen going off about something. So lame.

I don’t miss the insipid trends or memes. Like whatever is cool on social media this moment and having to keep up with whatever is hot.

I don’t miss having to hear about the latest shooting either. Or the latest bread and circus routine.

I don’t miss having to accept the increasingly worse state of affairs on the political front. For example the Citizens united ruling, or the state of gerrymandering in the country and the dumbing down of issues to talking points. Like someone is trying to score points. Pablum.

I also don’t miss the blaming of the immigrants, working poor and other minority groups. Punching down is really just so moronic. Our country was built on immigration. Yes even the native people immigrated from Asia. For solace I love to listen to some great comedy like George Carlin and Doug Stanhope

Expensive and complicated health insurance, prescription requirements for basic drugs, car reliance (save for NYC), poor quality meat and produce (save for southern climates), career obsession (primarily major cities)
