Hello,
I’m leaving the UK in January and moving to the Netherlands. This is my first time living outside of England so I was looking for some advice in things i need to do before going. I have a working visa (and a job) for the Netherlands, I was thinking more HMRC, UK bank account, etc.
Thanks :)
A second thing to take into consideration is that while you can keep existing savings accounts that earn interest open, like ISAs, you cannot pay into them while you are a tax resident somewhere else.
Congratulations, buddy, you are about to experience a much better life.
I’d suggest making sure you have a bank account that allows free international withdrawals/spending for when you arrive (off the top of my head monzo, starling, and HSBC offer these kinds of cards). Might take a minute to get a bank account set up abroad and it’s a pain getting charged for every purchase!
Other than that, good luck! I can’t think of anything else off the top of my head.
Inform hmrc that you’re leaving otherwise they might harass you to do your taxes for the rest of your life.
You give them too much credit. They aren’t organised enough to do that. When I left it was me doing the chasing and requesting information haha.
Do you have to let hmrc know when you leaving the uk? But how would they charge for taxes if you no longer work in the country?
I experienced this when I was self employed and had to file self assessment. So I had to let them know whether I was due to file one or not based on where I lived and employment status. Failing to let them know leads to fines. But it’s probably not the same if you’re employed at a company.
Ah I see thanks for your reply . Much appreciated.
If you receive any sort of income by cheque: it is no longer possible to cash cheques in the Netherlands. So make sure the method of payment changes.
Speaking of payment, the Netherlands is still fully invested in the maestro debit network; despite that being phased out. So it is possible a mastercard debitcard is not accepted in every shop.
You can cash cheques on apps up to £500 iirc on apps
Keep the UK bank account open.
Do you have housing sorted? Start looking asap.
Also, bunq bank accounts and some others you can open without a bsn. As mentioned before, maestro is king.
Student loan company has to be updated.
Congrats on moving to a first world country
