I think a happy person could have a good time anywhere. I lived in the DRC and enjoyed it. It’s about the connections you make & the appreciating the small things in life. If you’re this miserable in the Netherlands I honestly think it might be an excuse for something deeper? Worth reaching out to your GP as you might be depressed and not realise it? Not trying to sound condescending just worth looking at what it is that’s making you so miserable!

If you’re married he can keep the passport and your kids can have Dutch citizenship too in addition to US citizenship if you have any/plan on having any in the future.
