Just as an aside, it sounds like your employer didn’t cover relocation?

If that’s the case, I’d say that’s already a HUGE red flag, especially if you’re coming with a family. I would never move internationally for a job unless they were paying relocation either directly or via a lump sum signing bonus that was more than enough to cover everything.

Inconvenience aside, if they don’t pay relocation it shows they’re not willing to invest in you and in an extreme scenario (this) they can treat you disposably.

This is triggering flashbacks of when I had to convert my Singapore drivers license to a local one in Belgium.

They confiscated my original license, made me wait for 11 weeks without the right to drive, and then at the last minute wanted my former employer in Singapore to confirm that I was in fact living in Singapore when my license was issued there.

To this day they still hold my Singapore drivers license, because “You can only have one license”. I won’t tell them about my three others I guess.

Going to be a veryyyy bumpy ride for the locals, though probably their only chance at salvation.

On the other hand I’m sure it’d be plenty comfortable for a foreign couple coming in with USD and the right mindset.
