  • Lol yeah but even in the US white people ask each other this question, it’s really annoying imo (but 100% I know its not as frustrating as the experience of a nonwhite person). My grandpa was from Hungary, escaped during '54 and I have citizenship from there but I would never call myself Hungarian, in Hungary itself I joke with people I am papír magyar. I just say I am American, both to Americans and everyone else. Nothing else is relevant unless I’m talking with border police. The identity politics are insane

  • Tons of Scandinavians in Thailand obviously but mostly of the old retired variety. One nice thing here is no property taxes unless you are renting your place out. That bothered me in the US, in some places you pay so much in property taxes but there’s no guarantees: you may or may not get public trash pickup, you may or may not be connected to the public sewer systems (i.e. need a private septic system), cops & fire can take 1+ hour unless it’s life threatening, sometimes they don’t come at all, roads aren’t guaranteed to be good quality just because property taxes are high, etc.

  • Income requirements are just that. You aren’t actually handing over money. But for an elite visa that money is gone. 15 year elite visa is $70k now, and you’ll never see that money again + the benefits are worse than before as an additional fuck you. The 20 year visa basically doesn’t even exist anymore (invite only and $140k lol). Very glad I got my 20 year for $28k (almost same price as a 5 year now) before all this stupid shit happened, but I bet they’ll backpedal on it.
