Hi r/expats,

I am a 23 year old from Australia who is looking to move to Europe next year for approximately 6 months to work, with a 1 month trip at the end. Obviously for an Australian, London is the main choice but I can’t see how I would be able to work a casual job whilst affording the rent and living expenses.

I understand this may be an ambitious ask, but I am looking for on advice on where in Europe to work and what job I would need that would, at minimum, allow me to break even financially, as I have money saved but would like to keep this for a property purchase in the near future. Ideally I would like to work casual hours so I have flexibility for sporadic weekend trips here and there, but I am also open to working full time and taking the occasional Friday off or just going to different cities on the weekend.

Since I only speak English, this obviously limits my choices , but I hear that I could get away with only speaking English in Prague and the Netherlands? Are there good jobs I can work in these locations?

Any advice welcome! Thanks!

So to recap: You want to fly halfway across the world, rent a place in an expensive city, work a part time minimum wage job, fly across Europe on the weekend and break even?

    Really?

Part time, or “casual” job, in one of the most expensive cities on the planet, with no visa (presumably since you don’t mention it), that pays enough to cover your significant expenses and still have money to travel around too?

    Good luck.

This is virtually impossible on a 6 month ticket, especially with all the housing problems here now and the absurdly high rent.

Amsterdam: rent for a 1 bedroom, ~2000-2100 euro incl. utilities. Need to make at least 3x-4x that with a permanent contract (minimum: ~€5500). To an average apartment, there are 100-150 responses within 1 day. Housing shortage: 45.000. In the whole of the Netherlands, there’s a housing shortage of 390.000. Maybe you can find a room if you try extremely hard. Btw, Amsterdam is one of the most expensive cities of Europe. Some other cities in the Netherlands are less expensive but not much, but they’re far less international.

You’re most likely not eligible to work. You won’t get hired for any jobs besides some paying under the table, which is probably €10-15/h at most. Moreover, you can only stay in the Schengen area for 90 days.

You won’t be able to do all of what you want in any major city in Europe, if any. Definitely not in the Netherlands. Good luck!
