Hi,

European (50) with Colombian wife and Son (18) relocating to Medellin (for now) after redundancy. I understand Spanish but would take me a while to say what I want so need to improve that.

Anyone do similar and have any advice on the move or after getting there?

Working with consulate etc but looking for inside/recent tips if any.

Please and thank you

I lived in Colombia for several years. Its an amazing country, but it will be challenging. There are a lot of safety issues. Amazing but also complicated people.

Your son will have very few professional opportunities in Colombia, and a Colombian university degree may not be immediately useful abroad. Not a good move for him.

Spend 3 months in Medellin few years ago. Had no problems with language (don’t speak/understand Spanish at all). If you prepared to follow local diet (which is actually fantastic) Colombia is pretty cheap country to live comfortably. Especially with Colombian spouse.

My advice would be to try to reach retirement age in europe before moving to south america, then take advantage of pension in euros vs cost of living in local currency
