Hi,

im just wanting to hear about australian expats abroad and what their motivation to leave was?

For me the obsession with housing market and home ownership is just insane.

I know other countries are like this and particular capital cities but it just seems so engrained in the culture here. What do other people think?

The live and work to get a mortgage mentality.

I simply moved because I don’t want to live the whole of my life in one country. We are gifted enough these days to enjoy a lifespan that outlives a single place. Pointing this out to my peer group certainly helped lose a few on the way out. People sure can be insecure. Although I suspect no matter what I said I’d be a traitor to their live to work lifestyle.

To be fair to Australia it’s a great place if you’re not poor but I guess that applies to almost anywhere.

You’re right that the work/life mentality is off the charts. The housing problem was special but it’s universal now unfortunately.

I’m happy living in a country that, whilst isn’t as money rich as Australia shits all over it in culture and priorities.

And as an ex-Australian I’m also working on my entitlement issues 😆

I don’t mind. You would probably find it if you looked at my history anyway.

        Portugal.

In many ways it’s like Australia. Covered with eucalyptus, weather is very agreeable except where it’s too hot, people are generally as easy going as Australians.

You get a lot of the beach, nature and big city benefits but you can do them all in one day as the distances are a lot smaller.

Along with a rich history, new language, easy access to the rest of Europe it’s a no brainer for an Australian.

I do have to say that I wouldn’t pick it if I didn’t do well paid work but that probably applies to moving anywhere from one of the wealthiest countries in the world.

I took a mountain biking trip to Sintra a few years back. Couldn’t believe how similar some settings were to the Adelaide Hills. Corrugated iron fences and eucalyptus as far as the eye could see.
