Hi,

im just wanting to hear about australian expats abroad and what their motivation to leave was?

For me the obsession with housing market and home ownership is just insane.

I know other countries are like this and particular capital cities but it just seems so engrained in the culture here. What do other people think?

The live and work to get a mortgage mentality.

I don’t mind. You would probably find it if you looked at my history anyway.

    Portugal.

In many ways it’s like Australia. Covered with eucalyptus, weather is very agreeable except where it’s too hot, people are generally as easy going as Australians.

You get a lot of the beach, nature and big city benefits but you can do them all in one day as the distances are a lot smaller.

Along with a rich history, new language, easy access to the rest of Europe it’s a no brainer for an Australian.

I do have to say that I wouldn’t pick it if I didn’t do well paid work but that probably applies to moving anywhere from one of the wealthiest countries in the world.

I took a mountain biking trip to Sintra a few years back. Couldn’t believe how similar some settings were to the Adelaide Hills. Corrugated iron fences and eucalyptus as far as the eye could see.
