I think I’ve reached my breaking point here in the US. I have a fantastic job and lovely friends but this economy right now is killing me together with the remote area I live in. I think moving back home (EU) would be best for my mental health and overall quality of life BUT

a) I’ve spent my entire working years in the US so I’d have to start from zero back home which is very daunting but not impossible. All my degrees are either from the US or the UK, both are in legal fields so not really applicable to my home country.

b) I’m doing everything by myself. Whilst I have a lot figured out already, my biggest concern is the need to rely on a car for transportation. I have no problem selling my car but how long would I have to have a rental for? A week? Two weeks? Longer? I live away from bit of a ways away from friends so I don’t expect them to pick me up/play taxi all the time

And it doesn’t help that I’m an anxious af person in general 😆

    If economy is killing you right now in US it will be also effecting you in EU.

    I don’t believe in cross Atlantic migration for marginal improvement in economic situation. Because Cross Atlantic relocation is too stressful to keep migrating every time economic conditions become somewhat better on one continent compared to another one.

    Can’t say anything about what is more important local friends or family back home as this is very personal for different people.

    I suggest to consider if can you improve your current situation locally by moving to a different town, renegotiating your contract, by improving your resume. Are there other ways you can improve your financial circumstances?

    ( this can be easier than logistics of cross Atlantic relocation)

      Normally I’d agree but money-wise I’ll have it much easier in EU vs US simply bc I won’t have to pay a mortgage or rent. I can’t afford to move locally even though that has been a tempting option but housing prices are exploding - just like everywhere else- and in my area there are very limited rentals (also overpriced). Job-wise I’ve hit the jackpot, moving to a new location within the US would definitely be a downgrade in all aspects, except maybe finding more friends if it’s a bigger city.

      But also the loneliness is getting to me, despite friends. And I’m always terrified of something major happening to my health and then not being able to recover financially even with insurance. Another thing is that moving home was always on the table so I can eventually take care of my mum as she gets older. I’d just be going sooner than later.

      So I guess it’s a bit of both
