Hi, I’ll briefly go over our situation:

  • Husband, British citizen with Taiwan residency, living in Taiwan
  • Wife, Taiwan citizen (no British residency), living in Taiwan
  • Child, Taiwan & British citizen, living in Taiwan

In the event of war, me and my daughter (as holders of foreign passports) would likely be able to leave Taiwan and fly to the UK easily (via commercial or evacuation routes). However, my wife, who only holds Taiwan nationality and no residency in any foreign country might struggle.

I’m looking to find a third country (not UK or Taiwan) where me, my wife and child may be able to get residency (without the need to actually live there) through opening a business or perhaps a small investment. Then, in the case of emergency, we could all enter that third country together. Ideally, this third country where we gain residency could also lead to us gaining citizenship there (without needing to renounce our original citizenships) but this is not necessary. Finally, an Asian country would be best.

Does anyone have any leads or advice that might help?

Could you get her a UK tourist visa so she could accompany you, then, assuming there’s a war, she could apply for refugee status?

Argentinian citizenship has been a way many Russians have escaped their country since the start of the Ukraine war. The Argentinian passport is strong, they don’t require you to renounce other citizenship, and you can obtain full citizenship after only a few years.

I’ve looked into it myself and will likely pursue it within the next few years. It might not be exactly what you’re looking for, but definitely worth considering.

My bet, if the guy lived in Taiwan, it will be difficult to him to live in Argentina in many aspects. I considered that option myself, spent 3 months in Argentina, got robbed twice, tired of crazy inflation, protests under my windows every week, doing cambio and exchanging dollar cash on a black market, overall being paranoid about my things stolen - and ended up in Taiwan, which is probably, geopolitics aside, is the safest place I’ve ever lived. Plus, new president…Let’s just say, things look unpredictable now in Argentina.

Hey. Dubai is probably your best bet.

The visa process is simple, you only need to visit once every 6 months to keep the residency status active.

You can either invest in property or get a golden visa. Rental yield is pretty good here, so it’s not a wasted investment in any way.

I live in Taiwan as well, and have the same issue. Basically, in my opinion, if this starts, it will be very fast, unexpected, and there will be full blockade, nothing gets out. But assuming you’ll be able to get out… My primary backup options now are Turkey and Thailand. For Thailand, you can get Thai Elite for 5-10 years, although it is pricey now. Turkey, residence / citizenship through investment / real estate. I also consider Portugal (digital nomad visa) and Malaysia (also digital nomad). But, I guess for me it’s more options because I don’t have kids / wife.
