Hello I’m moving to Canada through a working holiday visa in a few months and I’m still undecided about which city to go. I’ve only visited Quebec City and liked it but I didn’t feel safe in the centre of town. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on which cities I could look for because I feel I might be overlooking some places because I didn’t do enough research. I’m bilingual French/English so it doesn’t really matter to me to live in a Francophone area. When it comes to work I’m a web dev but I’m assuming I’m gonna have a hard time finding a job in that economy so I’d say I’m pretty open to do anything really, even go back to school. My worry is mostly that I won’t have a car right away and also that I want to live in an area I feel safe in and transportation is also safe. Thanks for help <3
Canada is experiencing twin housing and opiate use crises so there is homelessness and drug use in all major cities, especially in the downtowns. At least in Southern Ontario, all cities I’ve been to since the pandemic have at least one if not more homeless encampments. If you do not have a car you will simply have to interact with these folks more as they reside in downtown areas that are close to public transit. They are typically harmless and will keep to themselves, unless experiencing a bad drug trip or psychosis.
Welcome to Canada. The streets are not paved with gold. Instead, they are increasingly home to Canadians who have been abandoned by our “progressive” governments.
