Hi everyone,

Maybe someone here can advise me :)

I’m a Mexican national who has been living in Germany for the past 3 years. I learnt recently that I would probably be eligible for a Spanish passport(which would make life a lot easier). Do you know if I can apply for the passport/citizenship from Germany because it’s an EU country? Or would I have to be living in Spain? I’m quite settled in Germany now, so I’d rather not have to move. I’ve tried looking online for information about this particular situation but have found it difficult. Would be grateful for all advice on the topic :)

Gracias ✌️

Look at /r/GermanCitizenship for questions about that.

You could get Spanish citizenship with 2 years living in Spain, because your original citizenship is Latin American, but you’re not currently a Spanish resident so your time in Germany would have no bearing on that as far as I know.

If your 3 years in Germany counts toward German citizenship requirements, it may be best to stay there to apply. If it doesn’t, the 2 year Spanish pathway is a good opportunity.

Honestly, do more basic research outside of Reddit about nationality laws. Every situation is highly specific. If you have recent Spanish ancestry, ley de memoria democrática is an option.
