I’m going to speak for France because it’s the one I know. 5 years is the time you can start sending your application, and then it takes some time for them to review it, invite you for an interview, and decide whether naturalization can be granted.

So it’s not just those 5 years (during which you pay taxes, you usually need at least three years of tax receipts to be considered for citizenship), but also the time during which you wait for a decision.

I’d say you need at least 6 years. You also should use that time to learn French to at least B1 level.

Any cultural or religious group with a diaspora can feel the same.

For instance if you’re from Bretagne/Brittany in France you’ll always find at least a few people from back home in the major cities.

Moved back to FR now, but I usually avoided French people abroad because it felt like a constant one-up parade on every aspect. Who had the best of what and came from the better uni, and so on.

Also people kept whining about how hard it was to get French cheese and wine (pun not intended). As if the point of living abroad was to keep living the same way as back home in a different country.
