I think all capital cities have such a high amount of people who moved there that it’s hard to meet any locals. I befriended more locals staying in small places in New Zealand than I did in capital cities like Amsterdam or Bangkok. I did know some locals in both capitals, but I had a much higher amount of expat friends. If you stayed in a smaller place, you’d be more likely to integrate with the locals. I’m 40 and stay in Inverness, North Scotland. I have a few expats as friends and I’ve been told it’s friendlier here compared to larger cities.
I’m from Scotland and I’ve lived in New Zealand, Thailand and Holland but I always come home because I feel closer to the people here. I liked living abroad but it always felt like something was missing after a few years. I would consider doing winters in another country when I’m older, as I have health issues that get worse in the cold, but long term this is my home. If your mum lives in France anyway, you can move back if you change your mind.
I’ve always wanted to go to Croatia but you’ve really sold it with this. I just want to wander around in peace. Any other similar countries?
I want to be cremated and scattered wherever I pass away as I don’t want my relatives going through any hassle trying to move my body or ashes.
