WiFi for data, and you can still receive calls but they are pricier. I’ve got 2 contracts in different countries, I tend to switch my Sims across as I also have 2 WhatsApp accounts but they won’t let you register more than one device to each, unlike telegram or signal.

You can keep your contract in the US, but all your received/made calls will be quite expensive.

Edit: I’m Norwegian. Our puppet leader during the war was named quisling. A word now synonymous with traitor.
Efficient_Science_47@alien.topBtoExpats•How does someone leave their country and start a new life at 40. What if it’s worse?English1·2 years agoIf you fear violent crime, the gulf region is very safe. I moved to my current country when I was 41. By many metrics is far worse than my home country, but I earn a lot more and have way more holiday and time to spend.
Moving isn’t easy, many things to consider. You are leaving behind your social and professional networks, family, et al.
Moving for a job at least guarantees a visa if needed. I would not recommend moving without a job, ever.
Are you looking for somewhere to settle forever, or just to pursue a career and life abroad? Depending on your area of work, there are plenty of temporary opportunities globally if you look. It can take time when you have no experience from a country to land a job there unless you have very niche skills.
The UK may have some options, it’s a fairly diverse country. Crime can be an issue, but probably not so much in areas where the work would be available.
I would avoid the middle east, even though it’s safe and super diverse. The quality of work would be at your detriment, getting a job outside that region would be difficult after some time.
