I too can relate having lived in 3 countries other than my own (Sourh Africa) and I now live in the USA for the foreseeable future - not least because ny grown up kids live here. One thing I discovered over the years is the notion of “home” which sort of gets frozen in your mind when you leave your country of birth, starts to diverge a lot from the reality of how it is now. People move on, friendships cool down, parents pass on - etc. I could not return home to SA now - it’s a different country and a different social support structure to when I left.
But I’ve been out of the country for 27 years. My point is that if you feel there are threads to pick up now that may not be there in another 5 or 10 years then maybe you should follow your heart?
That said I think you will never regret your years in Paris and you will always miss it. I feel the same about Amsterdam and London. There is always a night for a wistful what-if I’d stayed thought.
I regret not taking dual citizenship because the door then closes. If you haven’t done so you could do worse than become a citizen of the EU before you move back to the USA. Gives you some options.
