I currently live in Canada but I gained citizenship to an EU country a few years ago. I speak English and French but I’m willing to learn any language even though it may be challenging. I also have a physiotherapy degree. I was wondering what countries in the EU, if any, would be best suited for English speaking citizens.
Sometimes the country chooses you rather than you choosing a country. If you’re serious about this apply to jobs in different countries and see which one bites. Asking people on Reddit won’t help you.
Most common question in this subreddit. Kind of tired of these questions everyday
… what else is this sub for then aside from questions that engage with leaving one’s home country?
As an EU citizen you’re free to move to any EU country plus a couple of others tomorrow. If you want to work as a physiotherapist however, you need to see whether you pass the country’s legislation and whether you can practice there with only English or French. “Willingness to learn a language” is not an accomplishment, it’s expected of every immigrant in EU countries, if they plan to stay indefinitely.
Second this. Also check if your degree qualifications and professional accreditations are accepted in the country you want to move to.
A friend qualified in physiotherapy in Portugal, had no issue setting up a practice in Germany, but the NHS forced three years of requalification on her when she moved a decade ago.
As a Canadian citizen who acquired an Irish passport through my grandparents. I’d suggest starting with figuring out what countries your education qualifies, then apply to jobs while living in Canada to cities you enjoy. Get a job while still abroad.
I work in software. Applied to jobs in Berlin, Barcelona, Lisbon, Amsterdam, Dublin, and London. Ended up getting a job I liked in Amsterdam. Been here for nearly 4 years. Definitely worth it.
A word of caution. ⚠️ A friend’s older brother got an EU passport, then made some grand leap and moved to Amsterdam without a plan. Had no education and worked factory jobs. Ended up hating it. He asked me how to get money from the government. Said he was going to be homeless… with less than a year working here. I told him to go back to Canada. Don’t do that. These EU counties aren’t going to take care of you if you fail.
