I sometimes use travel vlogs as research material when planning my trips. I feel they have the potential to give us a glimpse of what everyday life in a foreign place away from the main sights. But I cannot for the life of me stand those vloggers who run around and yell “Hello!” at locals (I appreciate the effort to learn the local language, but who does that? That’s not normal human behaviour.).

Are there any vloggers who do not exhibit the behaviour above you could recommend?

Harald Baldr for me. I think he does the best job of showing a true account of what it’s like somewhere without being overly sensationalist. His longer videos and mostly unedited style aren’t for everyone but I generally find him to be the best one.

I often try to get the feeling of a city by watching a 4K walking tour on YouTube. I try to do this on Google Maps as well, but often their maps are 5+ years old. I just watched a few of Montevideo for example.

I also look on Google Maps for “consumption zones” which are the yellow areas that are typically commercial or mixed-use zones where people might be going around to get a feeling for the walkability and vibe.

Vloggers IMO are not a great fit for digital nomads. They are trying to create engaging content for the average person, which means, they are trying to create artificially engaging content, whether it reflects reality or not. I’m personally trying to see how day-to-day life would be if I were to be there for more than a few days.

There are a few I’ve been watching recently, but SwedishGringo has been the most helpful in my S.A. search (especially Brazil). TheCountryCollectors is another one off the top of my head

Oh man he’s so girl-crazy though. I sometimes wonder if he was targeted in Rio because people knew he had a YouTube channel. Bro stuck out like a sore thumb… but at least he’s enjoying himself.

I like Paddy Doyle, CB Media, and NoTimeToBeSad (which is more of a daily like in Thailand vlog).

BTW I say Hi to almost everybody I pass I’m Thailand. I at least give a big smile. It is amazing how friendly the locals are here. I always get a huge smile or a hello with a smile as a reply.

Agreed. His style is still very DIY and less commercialised than many of the other travel vloggers.

It’s got a less polished and more realistic feel.

These are exactly what the algo feeds me too. Add ‘Small Brained American’ to this list, it’s pretty good.

Why watch travel vlogs when I can literally be anywhere in the world that I want?

It makes no sense to me to live vicariously through vloggers when I can step outside and vlog myself if I felt like my experiences are worth sharing. (They aren’t.)

Indigo traveler. Goes to the most f ed up places in the world and often times genuinely transforms their life to the better. Very authentic and a perfect contrast to the „how much I get out of 100 USD in a Vietnam“
